love from afar: a letter a day.

long distance is hard, especially when you have limited phone access. during the school year, we can see each other every couple weeks, but during the summers i am stuck in new york doing summer classes and michael is running around all over the place. last year, when michael was in taiwan, we knew that we would probably only be able to talk briefly, once a week at the most. for the six weeks he was away, i wrote him a letter every day in a journal and gave it to him when he got back. it was great because i could just jot down all the little stories i wanted to tell him. if i was missing him or excited about something, i could write it in the journal and i knew he would get to see it eventually. this year i took a different approach...
remember a long time ago when i mentioned a surprise i was working on for michael? well here it is:
for every day (all 53 of them) that michael is in uganda, i wrote a little letter. there are notes, poems (written by other people as i am not a poet), songs, and pictures.
i even made a simple little pouch for them so they would be a little safer during his travels.
the best part is that i printed off a calendar to keep track of what days had what note so i'll know what little note he is getting each day.
something else i did last year was make a paper chain. i hadn't made one in years. it was fun to watch it get shorter and shorter and it sure helped the days go by. when i get back from my trip upstate that will be my first line of duty!
anyone else out there in a long distance relationship? how do you make the long periods away seem shorter?

  2. This is so cute. This reminds me of that movie with Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler where he passed away but wrote her love notes every day. :) That is pretty cool you are finding ways to constantly connect with your hubby. I can only imagine how hard it must be to do the long distance thing, but I think he will LOVE this.
